The hand following the intellect | Fuori Salone

Hands that join wood, shape clay, bend bamboo, weave gold, caress ink… transforming matter into memory.

For this edition of Fuori Salone, we curated the artistic direction of an installation – promoted and produced by First Italy – that transformed part of the courtyard of the Università degli Studi di Milano into an open-air journey through the art of Chinese making.

Bringing together the work of five master artisans, “La man che ubbidisce all’intelletto” weaves cinematic storytelling with technical wisdom to offer a close look at the excellence of Chinese high craftsmanship. A lens brought into focus by the technological sophistication of Alibaba and its Qwen Glasses, which reflect the same ambition that drives the masters: bridging ancient knowledge with the tools of the present.

Sixty-second black-and-white films depict the gestures of the artisans, displayed as a sequence of living tableaux. Only the final object appears in colour, creating a visual contrast that throws their mastery into sharp relief.
